  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    The Anglican Mission to Melanesia was founded by George Augustus Selwyn in 1849. The Mission's activities extended over the islands west of Fiji, including the Solomon Islands and the New Hebrides. The headquarters and training school were at Auckland 1849-67, then at Norfolk Island until 1920, when the training school moved to the Solomon Islands, with the diocesan office being opened in Auckland
  • Scope and Content
    Mainly correspondence 1887-96 and diaries 1889-1908 of Rev. Henry Welchman and the correspondence 1952-53 of C.E. Fox together with the draft of his book Lord of the Southern Isles. Other correspondence includes that of J.W. Blencowe 1862-74, Commodore James G. Goodenough (relating to the annexation of Fiji), Bishop Patteson (from Bishop Edmund Hobhouse 1868-70) and Miss M Rice, Oxford, 1941-52. There are also the journals of Cole C. Fowler 1889-91, a Mota phrasebook by Florence E. Coombe, sketches and articles by Eric Ramsden, drafts of writings by Rev. George Sarawia, John Still and Roger Ernest Tempest on the history of the Mission, including the work of Bishops George Augustus and John Richardson Selwyn. Finally, there are lists of members of the Mission compiled in 1895, 1924 and 1964, and a number of photographs of Melanesia
