Commander of H.M.S. Herald engaged in exploring expeditions in the South Pacific. The first cruise began in Feb. 1853 from Sydney and proceeded to Bass Strait to examine Port Dalrymple, then Lord Howe Island and the New Hebrides. The following year the survey was extended to the Isle of Pines and Fiji Islands and Sunday Island. Later expeditions surveyed Norfolk Island, Port Jackson, Dirk Hartog Island, and the Great Barrier Reef

Ca. 80 drawings and paintings, many of which are by J. Glen Wilson, commissioned by Captain Denham to record the survey voyages of H.M.S. Herald. Subjects include Isle of Pines, Lord Howe Islands, St Paul Island, the New Hebrides, Balls Pyramid, Shark Bay and Fiji. There are also sketches of Fijians, and fish, flora and birds. Photographs of J. Glen Wilson and the captain and crew of the Herald, 1860. Letter 1958, to present Captain Denham with photographs and report on the site of the grave of Fleetwood Denham, son of the commander of the Herald
