The General Wesleyan Missionary Society was formed by the British Methodist Conference in 1818. The Society's work in Australia commenced in 1815 with the arrival of Rev. Samuel Leigh, who also established a misssion in New Zealand in 1822. From 1826, Tonga (or the Friendly Islands) was ministered to by John Thomas. In 1835, William Cross and David Cargill began work in Fiji, and Peter Turner arrived in Samoa.

In 1854, formation of the Australasia Connexion of the Methodist Church was approved by the English Conference, and this Connexion assumed responsibility for missions in the Friendly Islands, Fiji and New Zealand, the latter becoming a separate Conference in 1910.
