Victor Maloney is a modern primitive artist and writer, originally from Adelaide but based in Cobar, NSW. His portrait of country singer Tania Kernaghan in a drought setting, ‘This Great Land’s Bleedin’!’, was nominated for the 2003 Archibald prize. His portrait of Slim Dusty won the 2003 Dobell Prize for Drawing. On the exhibition scene, he was a finalist in the 2003 Strathfield Eco Art Prize in Sydney and the 2003 Country energy Art Award in Armidale.

In 2002, Maloney won the Archibald prize for his portrait of painting of Broken Hill’s artist Pro Hart which featured on the cover of ‘Anthem of the Outback’, the lyrics of which he wrote as part of his ‘2002 celebration of the year of the outback’ and which became the first locally produced professional recording. Victor also entered three qualifying songs in the Songwriting Awards section of the Tamworth Music Festival. He was commissioned by Caltex to paint his ‘Great Cobar’ mural across the wall at the Truck stop to raise funds for his trip.

Between 2002-2004, he was invited by the State Library of New South Wales to write his autobiography, which described his early childhood development and artistic influences. In March 2004, the title was changed from ‘Reality Bites’ to ‘My Primitive Roots from the cradle to the cave’. He started writing his second book ‘The Lost World of Cobar’ in 2004, with the assistance and support from the State Library of NSW.
