  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Sir Donald McLean, born in Scotland, was a landowner and public servant who was instrumental in land negotiations between Maori and settler. When the New Zealand Land Wars resumed in 1863, McLean was appointed General Government Agent, Hawke's Bay, which directly involved him in the East Coast war. McLean served in this position until 1876. Unfair pressure, or actual fraud, was alleged against McLean by the Repudiation movement in Hawke's Bay and then by Governor George Grey. McLean was cleared of all charges by the Hawke's Bay Commission of 1873. -- Reference: Ward, Alan. 'McLean, Donald 1820 - 1877'.
