    Charles Gould, the son of John and Elizabeth Gould, was the first Geological Surveyor of Tasmania, appointed from 1859 to 1869. He also acted as a consultant geologist and land surveyor in Tasmania, the Bass Strait Islands and in New South Wales. -- Reference: Australian Dictionary of Biography. Vol.4, 1851-1890.     Notebooks of a geological surveyor, probably Charles Gould, relating work performed in Tasmania.
    VOLUME 1 (B 167: CY 4752, frames 1-96):
    19 Sept. - 31 Dec. 1860; Survey of the North East Coast of Tasmania including Mount Nicholas, St Patrick's Head, Fingal, St Mary's Pass, Scamander River, Yarmouth, Mount Pearson, George's Bay, Bay of Fires, Elephant Hill, Douglas River. The notebook includes notes, measurements, and sketches (ca. 43 ink & watercolour drawings) of the geographical features with particular interest in coal seams.
    VOLUME 2 (B 168: CY 4752, frames 97-158):
    ca. 4 Mar. - 31 Aug. 1867; Survey of the North Coast of Tasmania, commencing at Leven River and covering Sulphur Creek, Emu Bay, and Table Cape, Also contains notes on the Western Country or 'Waste Unsettled Lands'; Gordon Limestones; the Dial and Fingal Beds; 1867 Melbourne Cup [predictions?]; list of travel expenses; and some pencil and ink sketches, including "The Severn Falls May 9th 1867".
    VOLUME 3 (B 169: CY 4752, frames 159-207):
    18 Oct. - 12 Nov. 1859, 1871; Survey of the South Esk River District, covering Mount Nicholas, Tower Hill, Mount Saddleback, Junction of South Esk and Tyne, St Paul's Dome, Mount Victoria, Mount Albert, and Castle Hill. Also contains field notes; list of expenditure; estimate of account and weight of equipment, rations etc.; notes on birds; and ink, pencil, and watercolour sketches. Sketches include Mt Nicholas, Tower Hill, Mt Saddle back, Tower Hill connecting rank St Pauls Dome Ben Lomond, Fords ..., Castle Hill, Penguin silver mines, Mt Dunnel [?], and Mount Albert (ca. 43 drawings).
  • General note

    Blank pages are evident in each volume and the text is written in both ink and pencil.
    A typescript note on the provenance of the notebooks B 167 to B 169 by a Mitchell Library Officer in 1954 has been affixed to the inside cover of each volume.
    "Received from Charles Gould" is handwritten in ink on page 84 of B 168.
    "One parcel left in charge of me / for Mr Charles Gould Hobart Town / to go by Jones Waggon / John Bain" is handwritten on page 48 of B 169.
    B 167 and B 169 have provision for a pen to be stored at the lower edge of the notebook cover.
    B 168 and B 169 have a brass clasp for fastening.
    B 168 and B 169 are reversible as they have been used from front to back.
    "D.S.M" initials appear on page added to front of B 167.
    "D.S. Mitchell" signature inside front cover of B 169.
