  • General note

The identity of the man in this portrait is uncertain. Formerly catalogued as John Macarthur (1767-1834), and reproduced in John Macarthur / M.H. Ellis. Sydney : Angus and Robertson, 1955, as being John Macarthur the younger (1794-1831).
The inscription on the reverse suggests that the artist is Adelaide Ironside (1831-1867), which conflicts with the dates of the alleged sitters and with the date of execution.
The cardboard backing on the frame is damaged and there is a chip from the front of the frame.
  • Signatures / Inscriptions

In pencil on reverse of image, "I think this was drawn / by Miss Ironside"
