  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Charles H. Ford was a manager of the Australasian Rugby Football Team, known as the Kangaroos, which toured Great Britain in 1911-12. This was the second rugby league team to tour Great Britain and comprised players from Australia and New Zealand. They won all three test matches, a feat not repeated for 70 years.
  • Scope and Content
    1. Illuminated address, dated 4 August 1912, prepared by John Sands Pty Ltd of Sydney. The insignia of a silver fern, kangaroo and large 'A' appears at the top left and right hand corners. Signatures of eight team members appear at the lower right corner opposite a photograph of the team. The signatures are: C. W. McKivat (captain), P. A. McCue (vice-captain), E. Courtney, A. Halloway, A. Broomham, W. A. Cann, Dan Frawley and R. S. Stuart.
Text reads: "Mr C. H. Ford, The members of the Australasian Football Team which toured Great Britain in 1911-12, desire to place on record their appreciation of the many good qualities displayed by you in the management thereof. We fully recognise the arduous duties which you and your co-manager Mr J. Quinlan had to perform in keeping the team in a fit state to not only bring credit upon the League which sent us, but also upon our native land. We, as you know, are all young men, subject to the temptations and to the discontent which usually falls to the lot of such touring parties. A great amount of tact and hard work was therefore necessary to prevent these getting the upper hand, which, had they done so, would have assuredly brought discredit to our team and country. The enthusiasm shown by you at all times in anything for the betterment and welfare of our party is fully borne out in the results obtained on the tour, which formed the subject of many congratulations on our return. In asking you to accept this address as a token of our esteem and goodwill, we sincerely hope you will live long to recall with pleasurable feelings your association with the members of the Australasian Rugby Football Team, which toured Britain in 1911-12".

    2. Photograph of RMS Orvieto signed by all members of the team. The Orvieto was the ship on which the team sailed to England.
