The origins of Harry Harbord Morant are uncertain. It is likely that he was born Edwin Henry Murrant in England in 1864 and came to Australia in 1883. His great skills as a horse-breaker and rider led to his knickname 'The Breaker'. He also earned some fame as a minor poet and balladist. During the 1890s over sixty of his poems were published in the Bulletin. He fought in the Boer War with the Bushveldt Carbineers, an irregular unit formed to combat Boer guerillas. In 1902 he was court-martialled for the murder of Boer prisoners and a German missionary and executed by firing squad. (Reference: Oxford Companion to Australian Literature, 1994). - Scope and ContentFilm script for a proposed television mini-series, produced by Frontier Films, based on the life of Harry Harbord Morant known as 'The Breaker'.
