    VOLUME 1, A 1449/1 (CY 3266):
    1 May 1827 - 24 Dec. 1833; Correspondence, notes, and maps.
    Correspondence to the Surveyor-General's department written by various members of the public as well as letters to White from the Surveyor General that predominately relate to the granting and purchase of land, the establishment and marking of boundaries, the measurement of land, reports on areas to be settled, and general business of the department. Correspondents include James Chisholm, Thomas Harley, Richard Archbold, John Good. Also includes notes with mathematical figures (cost of land or wages); authorisation for salary; list by T. Mitchell of approved selections; map of the Goulburn River and Weymsiss Creek; Sketch shewing [i.e. showing] the road from East Maitland to Paterson; map of South branch of Wolombi River; View of Dubbo showing allotments of land; and several tables that provide description of farm or land to be measured by Assistant Surveyor White.
    VOLUME 2, A 1449/2 (CY 3267):
    1 Jan. 1834 - 31 Dec. 1835; Correspondence and maps.
    Letters to G.B. White in his capacity as Assistant Surveyor mainly from Thomas Mitchell and Samuel A. Perry regarding the allotment, measurement, and description of land in the Hunter region and Newcastle, and general matters pertaining to the Surveyor's department. Includes two hand coloured maps of the Wolmbi Brook and Town reserve of Wolombi, and pencil sketches of land allotments.
    VOLUME 3, A1449/3:
    1 Jan. 1836 - 2 Nov. 1839, 24 Jun. 1840; Correspondence, notes, and maps.
    Letters to G.B. White in his capacity as Assistant Surveyor mainly from Samuel Perry and Thomas Mitchell regarding the allotment and measurement of land, and general business. Includes: certificate signed by Richard Bourke for Act for Protecting Crown Lands; Tracing from Mr Floranees original survey of Veteran's allotments Wallis's Plains; Return of stores and field equipment ... Aug. 12 1837; Plan of 895 acres of land in the Parish of Howell [?] applied for by T. Caswell, 1837; Invoice of Government Stores shipped at Sydney from the Depot, Surveyor General's Department Parramatta ... stored at Green Hills Maitland ... 1838; Indenture between George B. White and William Bird to bind Bird's daughter to service of house servant, 1838;
    VOLUME 4, A 1449/4:
    11 Jan. 1840 - 30 Dec. 1847; Correspondence and maps.
    Letters to G.B. White as Surveyor predominantly from Samuel Perry and Thomas Mitchell, but others include T.C. Harrington and John Thompson regarding the land for sale, land for use by the Church and Schools, description of lots, and departmental business. Includes: map of church and school estate near James MacDougal's land; Church reserve of Paterson Plains; Proposed site for a Roman Catholic School House; pencil sketches; List of rations of forage for Maitland 1843; map area near Newcastle and Port Stephens; Sketch shewing [showing] 5 acres granted to the Presbyterian Church; Town of Wollombi; lots near William's River; Allot in Dungog; map of the reserve at the Long Bridge West Maitland and the area requested by the Roman Catholics for a Church; and map of allotments at Clarence Town.
    VOLUME 5, A 1449/5:
    5 Feb. 1851 - 1877, ca. 1881-1888, 1893, 1894, 1899; Miscellaneous documents.
    Letters, memoranda, clippings from the Government Gazette and Maitland Mercury, notes on conditions of employment, petitions, a summons, applications for information on land, departmental notices, career notes, an indenture between George Shaw Rutherford of London and Isaac & Jacob Garrick (farmers of Maitland) over lease of land, 3 Feb. 1851; and maps. Letters are from several correspondents that include Edward Griffith, Eliza King, and John Patterson. Maps include: scale for licenced Surveyor's fees 1854; Plan of the estate of Bona-Vista on the Patterson River (printed); plan showing original boundary between Guy Fawkes Run and Serpentine Run; and Sydney Gas Consumer's Company notice, 1857.
    VOLUME 6, A 1449/6:
    ca. 1828 - 1887; Miscellaneous papers, including correspondence, financial documents, lists, notes, and maps.
    Papers that to the management of the property Greenwood, disposal and description of land, and personal matters. Includes: Account of expenditure on the homestead of Greenwood by G.B. White 1830 to 1838; memo of expenses 1831 to 1839; tables of monies due; medical certificate stating George White has a liver disease; invitation from Stuart A. Donaldson, 1858; Tracing from a survey of the land occupied by John Reynolds at Paterson's River; map of swamp area near Maitland and Raymond Terrace; Sketch of 112 acres on the Morpeth road, the property of the late Mrs Eckford, 1866; pencil sketches on paper and butter paper; Grant of Land to George Yeomans 1829; Indenture between George Sydney and George Boyle White over lease of land, 1860; list of maps in long box; and the Estate of Castleforbes Hunters River the property of James Baker Esqre. for sale by the Australian Auction Comp. 24th Aug. 1840.
    VOLUME 7, A 1449/7 (CY 2542):
    1 Jan. - 17 Nov. 1847; Diary of G.B. White.
    Includes thoughts about the changing of each year and state of health, weather conditions, daily activities, travel, religion, and general news.

  • General note

    This collection was listedas part of the Sesquicentenary of Responsible Government in NSW 1856-2006 Project.

    Volumes were rebound in August 1919. Although volumes 1 to 6 have a Mitchell Library bookplate inside front cover, it is highly probable that they were part of the original D.S. Mitchell Bequest.
    Many pages have notes affixed to the reverse.
    Some letters have pencil sketches.
    Many pages bear watermarks. The individual dates of paper production have not been recorded as the watermarks for each manufacturer span several years but are largely contemporary with the content of the letters. Watermarks include; "I Annandai / and Sons" ; "Brocklesby & Morbey" ; "J. Coles" ; "Cowan & Son" ; "Dewdney & Co." ; "Downton Mill" ; "W. Fincher" ; "Gilling & Alford" ; "J.
