  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Christopher Kenneth Millar, bank clerk of Harword, N.S.W., enlisted aged 19, Aug. 1914 and served with the 2nd Battalion in Gallipoli and France. Ralph Perdriau, born in East Balmain in 1880, served in the first Military Force of the Commonwealth of Australia in the South African War in 1901-1902. He married Elizabeth (Lizzie) Millar in 1904. Christopher Kenneth Millar (always known as Ken) was her brother. He left Sydney in October 1914, and after training in Egypt, went ashore at Gallipoli in April 1915, Soon wounded he returned to Egypt and a hospital in Cairo. In August Millar returned to the fray until the evacuation in December, when he returned to Egypt to Tel-el Kebir, by this time a Sergeant, acting Lieutenant. In April 1916 his battalion was transported to France and saw action on the Western Front. He was wounded in July 1916 and laid up in a London hospital until November, but was hospitalised again on his return to France because of a hernia. It was announced on 2 January 1917 that the Military Cross had been awarded to Lieutenant Millar. He was on leave in London when the Armistice was declared and returned to Sydney in May 1919. His service in World War 11 is documented in three letters 1940 and 1941
