    Xavier Herbert (1901-1984) wrote for newspapers and journals such as Smith's Weekly and the Sydney Sun before publishing his first novel, Capricornia in 1938. After some years other novels followed including Soldiers' Women (1961) and Poor Fellow My Country (1975) which won the Miles Franklin Award.
