    This medallion portrait is adapted from the Royal Society medallion executed by Lewis Pingo in 1779.
    The medallion is by Wedgewood's modeller, Bert Bentley, as indicated by the presence of his maker's mark, ""O"", on the reverse.
    This plaque is similar to eariler portrait medallions of James Cook located in the Mitchell Library collection: P*26 (unframed medallion), P*27 (black basalt), and P*53 (wooden frame), P*65 (gilt frame).
