  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Maria Jane Barney married David Charles Frederick Scott in 1838. Initially they lived at the Barney's home, Fort Macquarie, ("the dear Fort" as Maria described it) then moved to Newcastle. In 1839 D.C.F. Scott took up land at Bengalla near Muswellbrook to breed Walers for the horse trade and grapes for wine. The property was sold after the Bank of Australia crash in 1843. For further biographical information on Maria Jane Scott, see record for: Maria J. Scott : pictorial collection, ca. 1835-1870's
Henrietta Barney, sketcher, was one of the four daughters of Portia Henrietta Teale and George Barney and therefore a sister of Maria Jane Scott. Both Henrietta and Maria studied drawing from Conrad Martens. Henrietta married Robert Dean in 1860.
