    George Allen, solicitor and politician, was born in England and arrived in Australia in 1816. He completed his articles under the Government Solicitor, Frederick Garling. Allen was admitted to practice as a solicitor in Sydney in 1822. He was the first solicitor to receive legal training in the colony and was the founder of the oldest legal firm in Australia. From Nov. 1844 to Nov. 1845 Allen was appointed Mayor of Sydney. George Allen was a nominated member of the old Legislative Council from 1845 to 1856. He was a member of the NSW Legislative Council from May 1856 to May 1861 and from June 1861 to November 1877.
