    Alexander M. Baxter, born in Scotland, was a barrister who served as Attorney General of New South Wales from 1826 to 1830.
    Alexander McLeay, born in Scotland, was a public servant and entomologist, who served as Colonial Secretary from 1825 to 1837 and was replaced by Edward Deas Thomson.

  • Scope and Content
    Correspondence, many in the form of circulars, to the Bench Magistrates (predominantly from Argyle, Inverary, Bong Bong, and Goulburn), from the Colonial Secretary's Office regarding punishment, jurisdiction of powers, transfer of duties to the Principal Superintendent of Convicts, tickets of leave, withdrawal of service, returns of summary of trials, work gangs, sentencing of female convicts, and material relating to the granting, surveying, and division of land.
    Additional material includes:
    Government Notices and Orders [printed] for 1830 on forms of remission of sentence granted to Prisoners of the Crown, applications for grants of land.

  • General note

    The binding is similar to A 666 and has lettering on spine, "Letters from Government Offices".
    "D.S. Mitchell" signature appears on front endpapers.
