  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

John Frederick Fallding (1921-2000), born in Cessnock, N.S.W., was a lifelong pacifist. As a young man he participated in Methodist Crusader Camps, then joined the Quakers and became a pacifist. A conscientious objector in World War II, he was directed by the authorities to do civilian work under civilian control building a road in the Watagan Forest for the Forestry Commission of N.S.W., 1942-1944. His experience on this project was related in a talk to the Australian Pacifist Conference in 1946. In 1949 he represented Australia at the World Pacifist Conference in India, where he was influenced by the non-violent activism of Gandhi.

Fallding held various offices with a number of organisations, usually as the secretary or treasurer of their N.S.W. branches, including the Australian Peace Pleadge Union, Fellowship of Reconciliation, London Peace Society, Pacifist Food Relief Society, Christian Peace Council, War Resisters' International, Howard Prison Reform Council and the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) in Australia. His friend and fellow pacifist, E. C. (Ted) Hartley, was Honorary Secretary of the Howard Prison Reform Council of N.S.W., formed by the merger of the Howard League for Prison Reform and the Prison Council of N.S.W..

Fallding worked as a clerk and accountant for the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney, 1944-1961. He was Chief Executive Officer of Lottie Stewart Hospital, Dundas, 1961-1975. He retired as Deputy C.E.O. of Lewisham Hospital in 1982.
