Oswald Brierly was born in Chester, England in 1817. After studying art in London he joined Ben Boyd's yacht 'Wanderer' in 1841 on a voyage to Australia. From 1842 to 1848 he managed Boyd's whaling station at Twofold Bay on the south coast of NSW. In 1848 he sailed with Owen Stanley on HMS Rattlesnake to survey the inner route along the Great Barrier Reef, the south coast of New Guinea and the Louisiade Archipelago. He returned to England in 1851 on HMS Meander. He served as an artist-observer during the Crimean War and visited Australia again during Prince Alfred's world cruise on HMS Galatea in 1867-68. Throughout his life Brierly was admired as a highly accomplished marine painter whose works are notable for their nautical accuracy. In 1874 he was appointed marine painter in ordinary to Queen Victoria. He was knighted in 1886 and died in London in 1894. - Scope and ContentA detailed guide to Oswald Brierly's collection of his journals, sketchbooks, individual sketches and framed pictures held by the Mitchell Library.
