Black & White artist, Emile Mercier, was born in New Caledonia and moved to Sydney in 1919. A freelancer, his work appeared in Smiths Weekly, the Bulletin, Truth and Daily Mirror. In 1948 he was employed by the Sydney Sun, where he worked until he retired in 1968 -- information from file. - Scope and ContentCartoons depict French and allied soldiers, including one which features an Australian soldier. Comic strip featuring 'Labronchyte & Boulenboi' or 'Laboulette & Boulemboy', published in the French weekly newspaper 'Le Courrier Australien' from 1940 onwards.

The Library holds a complete set of the newspaper 'Le Courrier Australien', as well as manuscript papers relating to the newspaper (ML MSS 2587 & Add-On 1851) with associated photographs (Pic.Acc.6611) which relate to World War II.
