In 1840 Marshall Waller Clifton was appointed chief commissioner of the Western Australian Land Company's planned settlement at Australind, now a suburb of Bunbury.The company virtually ceased operations in 1843 and Clifton was retrenched. He was a member of the W.A. Legislative Council from 1851 to 1858. - Scope and ContentAutograph letter signed by Marshall Waller Clifton to J.W. Croker from Australind, Western Australia, 19 July 1841. Clifton gives an account of conditions at Australind and his progress in founding a colony there under the auspices of the Western Australian Land Company. Also included is a copy of an advertisement for Hemming's patent improved portable houses, with manuscript annotations.
