  • Scope and Content
    Brierly's personal observations of whales primarily whilst at Twofold Bay including physical descriptions, customs, habits, "facts", and matters pertaining to whaling. The main types of whales mentioned are the Right, Humpback, and Killer Whales. There are a few sketches of whales and Brierly also relates encounters with whales whilst saling on the Maeander.
  • General note

    The volume is compiled from several accumulated notes on various types and sized papers and was rebound at an unknown date.
    Some notes are written on the front of drafts of letter. One of these (reverse of p.16) refers to an application to have Brierly awarded the Black Sea and Baltic Medals for services rendered during the Crimean War.
    Notes are made in pen and pencil.
