Gustavus Brooke (1818-1866) was born in Dublin, Eire, and began his acting career there in 1818. After two tours of the United States in 1851 and 1852 he was engaged by George Coppin to give two hundred performances in the principal towns of Australia and New Zealand. The company which consisted of Brooke, his wife Marianne, leading lady Fanny Cathcart, and stage manager Richard Younge, reached Melbourne in February 1855. After extensive touring and much success the company played its last night in Melbourne in May 1861 and returned to England. He was engaged by Coppin again, for a two year tour but his ship sank five days out from Plymouth in January 1866 and he drowned - Scope and Content1855-1895; 3 letters by Brooke, two appreciations of his acting, photographs of Brooke and his wife, newscuttings and printed material about Brooke and buildings in Melbourne and the career of George Coppin. Two of the letters have large engraved letterheads of Coppin's Olympic Theatre, 1855, and the Theatre Royal, 1857, both in Melbourne (Call No.: MLMSS 7238)
