  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Jack McHarg has published four important biographies of Australian cricketers of the Bradman era - Stan McCabe (1987), Bill O'Reilly (1990), Arthur Morris (1995) and Lindsay Hassett (1998).
  • Scope and Content
These letters concern an extract from McHarg's biography of the Australian legspinner Bill O'Reilly which was published in the Adelaide Advertiser under the headline 'The Man Who Hates Bradman.' The extract dealt with the prickly relationship that existed between O'Reilly and Bradman. McHarg wrote to Bradman apologising for the headline and eventually received two lengthy replies in which Bradman expressed his distress on reading the article and discussed his relationship with O'Reilly, the relative skills of rival legspinners Clarrie Grimmett and Frank Ward and related matters. (Call No.: )
The collection comprises two original letters from Bradman to McHarg (16 and 21 January 1991); copies of McHarg's letters to Bradman (29 July, 29 August, 29 October 1990 & 9 January 1991); copies of McHarg's letters to the Adelaide Advertiser (23 August, 21 September) and a copy of the editor Peter Blunden's reply (12 September 1990).
