  Richard Jones was the first to commence deep-sea whaling from New South Wales. By 1825 he was part-owner of five whalers, the Pocklington, Harriet, Mercury, Saracen and Alfred. Severely hit by the Depression of 1842-44, he was declared insolvent in November 1843. All his ships were sold. Reference: Australian Dictionary of.2.
