  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Lieutenant, later Lieutenant Colonel, George Johnston sailed with the marine detachment of the First Fleet. The turning point in his promising career came with the arrest of Governor Bligh in 1808.
Johnston was the third key figure, along with Governor Bligh and John Macarthur, in the Rum Rebellion, the uprising that led to the overthrow of Governor Bligh. Johnston led the troops who arrested Governor Bligh on 26 January 1808. Following the arrest, Johnston assumed the title of Lieutenant Governor, imposed martial law and took over administration of the colony. He remained in this position until succeeded by Lieutenant Colonel Foveaux seven months later in July 1808.
Johnston returned to England in 1808 where he was court martialled in June 1811. Johnston was found guilty and cashiered. His appeals to be reinstated to his rank failed, and he was refused a government funded passage to return to New South Wales. In response to Johnston's appeals, his time of service, and supported by John Hunter, the Colonial Office eventually provided him with a passage to New South Wales. He arrived in May 1813 and resumed his farming intersts. Governor Macquarie had been directed to treat Johnston as he would any ordinary settler.
Johnston's influential patron, the Duke of Northumberland, continued to support Johnston throughout this period.
