  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Thomas Reddall, clergyman and educationist, was born in England in 1780. In 1819 he was appointed assistant chaplain to New South Wales. He arrived in Sydney in September 1820. As well as performing his clerical duties he was involved in the education of children and rural pursuits. Three months after arriving he opened a private school at Macquarie Fields, two of his first pupils being the sons of Governor Lachlan Macquarie and Lieutenant-Governor William Sorell of Van Diemen's Land. In 1824 Reddall was appointed director-general of all government schools. He died in 1838. (For a more detailed biographical note see vol. 2 of the Australian Dictionary of Biography.)
