  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Conrad Martens, artist, left England in 1833 when Captain Francis Price Blackwood of the H.M.S. Hyacinth offered him a three-year cruise to the East Indies Station (Indian Ocean and South-East Asia). Martens later transferred to the Beagle at Montevideo, Uruguay, after learning that its captain, FritzRoy, wished to engage an artist. The journal documents Martens' period on board the Hyacinth and Beagle and also his passage across the Pacific on the Peruvian and Black Warrior, culminating with his arrival in Sydney Harbour on 17 April, 1835.
