  Thomas Mitchell, in his capacity as Surveyor General of New South Wales (1828-1855) was instructed by Governor Bourke to define and report on the limits of Sydney.

• Scope and Content
  Copy of the Governor's minute of the case [left hand column, page 1].
  Mitchell defines the limits of the Sydney - "formed by the bays of Wolomoloo [i.e. Woolloomooloo] and Darling Harbour the regularity of the streets not extending beyond where Campbell Street intersects Elizabeth Street..."; and discusses a plan for extending streets and boundary lines, and the sale of Captain Brook's property in Surrey [i.e. Surry] Hills as an opportunity to modify existing divisions.
• General note
  
  Incorrect title on spine, "Report to Colonial Secretary".
  
  The pages within the volume are folded in half, with Mitchell's report written in the right hand column, and in the left on the reverse.
