  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Throughout William Parker Snow's career, he travelled on several vessels including the Plantagenet (Captained by Pollock), City of Poonah, and Allen Gardiner. The papers in this volume relate to his journeys and financial matters.
The idea of a travelling-floating mission to preach to the people of Patagonia and Tierra Del Fuego was originally conceived by Allen Gardiner, founder of the [British] Patagonian Mission Society, prior to his death in 1851. His successor, Reverend George Despard, enacted this scheme with the construction of the Schooner "Allen Gardiner" in 1854. William Parker Snow was captain of this vessel and transported people and goods to establish an operational base on the Island of Keppel, Western Falkland Islands. From this experience, Snow wrote "Two Years Cruise off Tierra del Fuego [1857]" -- Reference: South American Mission Society Archives, Online Feb. 2003
  • Scope and Content
The majority of the volume consists of an account of the voyage to Port Phillip in the City of Poonah. The narrative commences at Plymouth and describes the ship, the departure, state of accommodation, sea and weather conditions, a burial at sea, Snow's role as President at a Court of Inquiry on one of the refractory needle women, Snow's wife's health, daily routines, and places of anchor.
Includes receipts issued to Snow for rents paid on a house at St Kilda; newspaper cutting and papers relating to the sale of a cottage in St Kilda; memorandum from Carrington stating that he is the custodian of Snow's Australian deed of property whilst Snow was on the Patagonian Missionary ship "Allen Gardiner"; plans of subdivision allotment C portion No. 68 ... land of G. Nicholson; letters from Willis and Dickens on stationery headed "Office of Household Words, a weekly journal conducted by Charles Dickens" about literature and articles to be published; correspondence on financial matters; programme for Theatre Royal Plantagenet Christmas festivities; descriptions of travel.
  • General note

The first date in the City of Poonah narrative is 22 Jul. (though text precedes this) and ends 16 Oct. Amendments and additions are evident and the account is not in strict chronological order
