  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Railroads in N.S.W. were initially operated by two private companies, the Sydney Railway Company, incorporated 1849 and the Hunter River Railway Company, incorporated 1853. A shortage of speculation capital and general inadequacies led to the appointment of the first Commissioners in 1854, and responsibility for the continued development of railways being undertaken by the government's Public Works Department. This material relates mainly to the administration, improvement, and expanision of railways in Australia and N.S.W. -- Reference: State Records, N.S.W. Online, Feb. 2003

    Correspondence, reports, printed notices, and ephemera pertaining to railway matters. Includes: Report of the Liverpool Railway Provisional Committee, 1848; lists of railway contracts and works in progress for 1868, 1870-1872; return showing contracts for Public Works Department Harbour and Rivers Branch during 1870-1872; letter to Sir Henry [?] from Daniel Cooper regarding appointment of railway manager; article in "The Engineering Review" for 1895 on Edward Millar Gard Eddy (appointed Chief Commissioner of Railways to N.S.W. in 1888); duties of general manager of railways; comparison of wages to railway men in Australian colonies.
    Printed material includes: Report of Railway Commissioners in support of the extension of the city railway into Hyde Park, 1889; Clarence River system of railways, Grafton-Tweed Railway, 1887; Act to make better provision for the management of the Government Railways and Tramways of N.S.W., 1880
