During the period 1830-1856, the main agencies responsible for the administration of land in the Colony were the Colonial Secretary (Alexander Macleay 1826-1836, Edward Deas Thomson 1837-1856), the Surveyor General (Sir Thomas Mitchell), and the Commissioners of Crown Lands. The phrase "land grants" was used for the alienation of Crown lands (that led to the granting of freehold title). -- Reference: State Records, N.S.W. Barney) for 1851
