  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Reverend George Hunn Nobbs, 1799-1884, arrived at Pitcairn Island, 5 November 1828, where he was welcomed by John Adams, the aged patriarch and only surviving member of the Bounty. Reverend Mr Nobbs became the pastor and schoolteacher on Pitcairn Island, and on 18 October 1829 he married Sarah Christian, granddaughter of Fletcher Christian. In 1852 Admiral Fairfax Moresby arranged for Nobbs to visit England, where on 30 November he was ordained by the Anglican Church and licensed as the chaplain of Pitcairn Island. When he returned to Pitcairn Island in 1853, Nobbs had been appointed also as the missionary of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel. In 1856, the Pitcairn community voted to migrate to Norfolk Island, where they arrived on 8 June 1856, but it proved to be a disappointment and some members of the community elected to return to Pitcairn Island in 1858 and 1863. Reverend George Nobbs remained on Norfolk Island and continued as the community's pastor and teacher until 1859, and chaplain until his death on 5 November 1884. One of his sons, Francis Mason Nobbs, was appointed as Chief Magistrate of Norfolk Island on 31 March 1876
