  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

HMS Resolution and Discovery, under the command of Captain Charles Clerke, left England for Cook's third and final Pacific voyage (1776-1780).

Following Cook's death on 14 February 1779 in Hawaii, Clerke assumed command of the expedition. When Clerke died on 22 August 1779 from consumption, command was assumed by Lieutenant John Gore (Resolution) and James King (Discovery).
  • Scope and Content
The journal consists of detailed remarks recorded daily in the log's 'Observations' column which is sometimes expanded over several pages; with special sections describing places of particular interest visited, including Sandwich Islands (pages 19 - 44). King George's sound (pages 180 - 135) Sandwich Sound (pages 173 - 183) 'In the Great River' (Cook Inlet) (pages 196 - 209) and Samganoodha Harbour (Page 239 - 247). The journal includes comparative vocabularies of the languages of some Pacific islands (pages 48 - 49) and of the Nootka Indians at King George's Sound (pages 142 - 146); and tables of detailed astronomical and magnetic observations taken at various places. In his note of William Anderson's death, King gives and appreciation of the surgeon's qualities.

The Manuscript., possibly a fair copy, is neatly kept, with alterations and insertions throughout, some possibly in another hand.
