Barrister, emigrated to Australia in the early 1870's. Lived at Sandhurst, Victoria; was admitted to the Supreme Court. He went to Fiji, 1872, in the hope of becoming Attorney-General, but no failing to obtain the post, returned to Australia - Scope and ContentDiary, August-December 1872, containing brief descriptions of Philp's experiences in Australia with extensive references, inter alia, to the manners and customs of the Fijian peoples, and the political scene in Fiji
