    Reverend John West , 1809-1873, arrived in Tasmania in 1838. He worked in Launceston, helping to found the City Mission, public hospital and other institutions. He was prominent in the movement to abolish transportation of convicts. In 1842 he helped to establish the Launceston Examiner and in 1854 he moved to Sydney to become the editor of the Sydney Morning Herald
