    C. S. Akers, born in 1828, joined the British army in 1846. As a lieutenant in the Royal Engineers he was stationed in Tasmania, 1849-1855, from where he visited Norfolk Island, 1851-1853, Melbourne and the Victorian goldfields, 1853 and 1854-1855 on military duties. Journal extracts from 1849-1850 are in the Dixson Library at MS 13
  • Scope and Content
    Describes inter alia experiences and social life in Hobart and Port Arthur, 1850-1851 and 1853, Norfolk Island, 1851-1853, and Melbourne and the Victorian goldfields, 1853-1855, Aboriginal Australians in Victoria in 1853, and the convict system in Norfolk Island, 1853.
