    John James Vial, bricklayer of St. Peters, New South Wales, enlisted at the age of 20, 14 Sept. 1914 and embarked from Sydney on Transport A19 Afric, 18 Oct. 1914. He served with 1st Battalion, D Company in Gallipoli and was wounded there, Aug. 1915. He was severely reprimanded for being asleep on duty, 8 Jan. 1916 and hospitalised in Tel-El-Kebir with influenza, 15 Jan. 1916. In Feb. 1916 he was hospitalised in Cairo with pneumonia and invalided to Australia on hospital ship Karoola in April 1916 before re-embarking on Euripides Sept. 1916 and serving in France and Belgium. He was hospitalised in France and transferred to England with appendicitis Jan. 1917 and hospitalised in France with trench fever, Aug. 1917. After rejoining his unit in September he was killed in action in Belgium, 3 Oct. 1917
