    C. C. Towle was an amateur anthropologist who co-founded the Anthropological Society of N.S.W. He wrote papers on archaeology in N.S.W., corresponded with other amateur archaeologists as well as some prominent anthropologists and researched Aboriginal sites along the Great Western Highway and Western New South Wales. He presented a large collection of stone implements to the Australian Museum. Towle died in 1946.

  • Scope and Content
    This collection includes correspondence, newscuttings, notes on the explorers Ernest Giles and W. H. Tietkens, the Anthropological Society of NSW as well as notebooks about Aborigines, particularly in Western NSW. It includes photographs of carved and scarred trees, Aboriginal artifacts, fisheries and middens, burial grounds, stone arrangements and rock art. Many of these photographs were taken by amateur archaeologists Lindsay Black and his son Russell Black.
