  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Ellis Silas (1885-1972), painter and illustrator, sailed from London to Australia in 1907 and settled in Perth, Western Australia. He enlisted in October 1914 at the age of 30 and was made a private in the 16th Battalion, C Company. He trained as a signaller and embarked for Egypt from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A40 Ceramic on 22 December 1914. His unit landed at Gallipoli on the evening of the 25 April 1915 where he served at Pope's Hill, Quinn's Post and Bloody Angle until 28 May 1915 when he was evacuated to Egypt suffering from shell shock and fever

Describes training at Blackboy Hill, Western Australia and Williamstown, Victoria, voyage to Egypt on the Ceramic, Dec. 1914-Feb. 1915, experiences in Egypt, Feb.-Apr. 1915, landing at Gallipoli and fighting on the peninsula, Apr.-May 1915, voyage to Alexandria on a hospital ship and treatment in hospital in Heliopolis
