  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Phillip Parker King, rear admiral and explorer, son of Philip Gidley King entered the British navy in 1807. Earl Bathurst through the Lord Commissioners of the Admiralty commanded King in 1817 to complete the hydrographic surveying and charting of the coast of the continent of New South Wales begun by Matthew Flinders and the French explorers Peron and Freycinet. Frederick Bedwell and John Septimus Roe were assigned to assist him. In four voyages undertaken between 1817 and 1822, King, in H.M. cutter Mermaid, circumnavigated the continent three times and surveyed Macquarie Harbour, Tasmania. A fifth voyage in H.M. brig Bathurst, formerly the Haldane, included a visit to Port Louis, Maruitius, for supplies and repairs. King returned to England in the Bathurst in 1822-1823. He returned from England and settled in New South Wales in 1832
