Commodore Goodenough saw service in both the Atlantic and the Pacific, being at the China station from 1856-1861. In 1873 he commanded the Australian station, visited the islands and had part in the preparation of annexation of the Fiji Islands to the British Crown. He was wounded by natives in New Hebrides 12 August 1875 and died eight days later - Scope and ContentJournals: HMS Calcutta 20 May 1854 to 6 July 1854; Royal William from 6 July 1854 to 12 Sept. 1854; Calcutta from 12 Sept. 1854 to 2 Jan 1855; Hastings from 13 Feb. 1855 to Sept. 1856; Raleigh from 4 Sept. 1856 to May 1857.
