Ludwig Leichhardt (1813-1848?), naturalist and explorer was born in Prussia and arrived in Sydney in 1842. In 1844 he led an expedition to Port Essington, departing from the Darling Downs in October and reaching his destination in December 1845, after covering almost 4800 kilometres. In 1848 he led another expedition with the aim of crossing the continent from east to west. After heading inland from the Darling Downs the expedition disappeared without trace. -- Reference: Australian Dictionary of Biography, Vol.2, 1788-1850.
