  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

John Oxley was born in England. He joined the navy in 1799 and for some years was engaged in survey work around the coasts of Australia. In 1812, having retired from the navy, he was appointed surveyor-general of New South Wales. In 1817 and 1818 he led two expeditions during which he explored the Lachlan and Macquarie Rivers and discovered the Castlereagh River, the Liverpool Plains, the Hastings River and Port Macquarie. In 1823 he explored the Brisbane River and recommended Moreton Bay as the place for a convict settlement. It was primarily through his efforts that, after 1821, land grants to new settlers had to be properly surveyed before they were handed over. In 1825 he began a survey of the colony and its division into counties, shires and parishes but died before this work was completed.
  • Scope and Content
Contents include accounts of two tours by Macquarie, 1815; Oxley's first expedition 1817; visit to the Blue Mountains and Bathurst, 3-16 Oct. 1820. At the back of the volume are some maps and sketches; a fair copy of George William Evans' letter to Macquarie, 13 May -12 June 1815; meterological notations; Oxley's letter from Lewes Creek on the Lachlan, 28 April 1817; Position of Macquarie Lighthouse, 28 April 1818; Barometrical Observations taken on the road to Bathurst, 17 Feb.-1 March 1823. One of the pages at the back bears the inscription 'Evan's Journal' but this appears to have been added later.
Included with this notebook are a letter from A.C. Geikie to the Surveyor General, from Bathurst, 30 June 1888 regarding the notebook and enquiring about Evans, Bathurst and the Blue Mountains road; with a reply, 3 July 1888; newscutting, 1895, regarding Rev. Dr. Geikie.
