    Poet. Neilson's formal education was limited and he spent much of his life as a farm-hand and itinerant worker. He was largely self-taught in poetic techniques but received valuable advice and encouragement from the critic and editor A. G. Stephens
  • Scope and Content
    27 notebooks, 1895-1949, containing poems by John Shaw Neilson in his and other hands, including 'Green Singer', 'You and Yellow Air', 'Flight of the Weary', 'The Smoke Parrot', 'Let your Song be Delicate'. The notebooks also include annotations by Neilson's brother Frank, letters to A. G. Stephens, 1906-1908, and financial records. Newspaper cuttings, 1912-1948, of criticism of Shaw Neilson's poetry are also included
