    Bourn Russell (1794-1880), was born at Sussex, England, and arrived at Sydney, N.S.W. in 1826. He was part owner and commander of ships on the India, China and South Seas runs, and surveyed parts of Sakhalin Island, the north coast of Japan, the Solomon Islands, the Louisiade Archipelago, Dampier Strait and New Guinea. After some whaling ventures he opened a store at West Maitland, N.S.W. in 1835. Russell was elected to the first Legislative Assembly of N.S.W. for the seat of Northumberland Boroughs in March 1856 but was disqualified in August of that year. He was a member of the NSW Legislative Council (1858-1880).

    Journal of the ship, Lady Rowena, 1830-1832, with later annotations, 1839-1846, and incidental papers, 1820-1929. Maps, illus. Includes a brief account of the voyage from London to Sydney, 25 April-19 August 1830, and a detailed account of the whaling voyage which encompassed the Solomon Islands, Papua, the Bismarck Archipelago, Japan, Mariana Islands, Admiralty Islands, Dampier Strait, Trobriand Islands, Caroline Islands, Samoa, Tonga Islands, Santa Cruz Islands, 2 November 1830 - 25 June 1832. Describes native dress, vocabulary, appearance and culture; island geography, flora and fauna.
    The Japanese section of the journal covers the period 31 March - 19 May 1831. These pages are found at frames 189-305 (117 frames) in the microfilm copy at CY 501 (total of 563 frames).

  • General note

    This collection was originally lent for copying and filmed in Nov. 1978 as reel MAV/FM4/7557. The originals were subsequently acquired in January 1979 and the microfilm copy was transferred to CY 501.

    This collection was listed in 2004 as part of the Sesquicentenary of Responsible Government in NSW 1856-2006 Project.
