The Family Welfare Bureau was founded in 1939 to assist service men and their dependents, funded by the Australian Comforts Fund. It was reconstituted in 1946 as a community service available to any person or family in need of help, and pioneered activities re handicrafts for the aged, a baby-minding centre in the City and an emergency housekeeping service. The Bureau ceased operations in 1974.
