John McGarvie Smith, 1844-1918, bacteriologist, discovered an anthrax vaccine that gave protection by a single innoculation and kept indefinitely without deterioration. In 1918, he donated the secret of this discovery to the state of New South Wales and the McGarvie Smith Institute was established to manufacture the vaccine
