William Ebrington Gordon, 18-- - 1897, later Rear-Admiral, was a master's mate on the paddle wheeled steam sloop H.M.S. Virago during a tour of duty in the Pacific. He returned to England in 1854 on HMS Portland as a newly promoted lieutenant. - Scope and ContentJournal kept while on HMS Virago and HMS Portland. Describes the voyage of H.M.S. Virago from Plymouth Sound, England, September 1851 to Cape Horn and the South American coast, with voyages to the Marquesas and Society Islands to August 1852, Pitcairn Island, January 1853, Society Islands and Honolulu, February-March 1853, and Canada, with the narrative account ending January 1854. Describes inter alia, landscape, inhabitants, political conditions and social life of the places visited, including copies of letters from Matthew M'Coy, Arthur and Edward Quintal, and of Pitcairn Island National anthem. With uncorrected proof for Good Words, 1898, of an article by Sir Albert Hastings Markham, entitled 'A Tale of the sea: an episode of 1851', which retells an incident in the journal. The journal chronicles Gordon's service on both ships and is embellished with watercolour charts and topographical views.
