J. Atwool was appointed on 16 February 1838 as Clerk of Works, 4th class and sent to take up duty with the Royal Engineers in Sydney, N.S.W. He left England in May 1838 on the John McLella returning to England in 1843 - Scope and ContentInclude copies of letters re his appointment, 1838, building of houses in Sydney for various people, 1841-1842, the Wesleyan Centenary Chapel, York Street, 1842-1843, a letter from Colonel Barney recommending his promotion, 1843, and one incomplete letter from Captain G. F. W. Bordes in Norfolk Island, 1841. Section H and part of Section I, Memorandum on voyage to New South Wales, 1838, referred in the contents list, are not included
