  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

James Cripps, b.1830, was with the 99th Regiment and journeyed to Australia on the Hashemy, one of the first two transports carrying ticket-of-leave men. He later served in Norfolk Island until the penal settlement there was abolished. He transferred to the 40th Regiment in 1855 and left the army in 1859
  • Scope and Content
A narrative, divided into chapters, beginning several months before the voyage to Australia commenced in February 1849. Arriving at Hobson's Bay, 1 June 1849 and Port Jackson, 8 June 1849, Cripps then went to Hobart and then to Norfolk Island until 1854 when he returned to Hobart via Port Arthur, arriving on 20 August 1854. In December 1855 he went to join the 40th Regiment in Melbourne and in March 1856 went to Ballarat where he stayed until September 1858, when he returned to Melbourne. Includes a section on the Eureka Stockade, although Cripps was not an eye-witness. The final sections are concerned with the life story, to 1859, of Reginald Steel, a citizen of Melbourne whom Cripps once had caught as a stowaway
